Photo by erin m.Organizers of Screen on the Green, one of the District’s most beloved summertime institutions (what with the HBO Dancing and all), announced this afternoon that they’d be coming back for another season.
This summer’s screenings — featuring four classic, iconic films — will take place at a new location, a few blocks down the Mall, between 8th and 14th Streets NW. The films will play at dusk and on 35mm film projected on a 20-by-40-foot screen. All the dates are rain or shine (unless, of course, lightning starts to strike).
Despite the overall success of the festival, it was nearly lost in 2009, when primary corporate backer HBO pulled out of sponsoring the event. Fortunately, Comcast and the Trust for the National Mall stepped in to save the 2009 event; Comcast stayed on last year, and HBO and Comcast are teaming up to sponsor this year’s SOTG. (Supporters working to keep the festival going accept tax-deductible donations through their website.)
Without further ado, this year’s schedule:
July 25 – In the Heat of the Night
August 1 – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
August 8 – Gentlemen Prefer Blondes
August 15 – Cool Hand Luke
Be sure to check out our complete listing of this summer’s outdoor movie festivals, which, with SOTG, is now pretty much complete.
