Mayor Anthony Williams knew how it was done.Good morning, Washington. Today’s a big day in the District — the city’s outdoor public pools ceremonially open their doors, and given the heat we’ve been feeling, it couldn’t come a minute too soon. DPR’s outdoor pools officially open to the public tomorrow, but in keeping with tradition, Mayor Vince Gray will be on hand at noon at the Barry Farm Recreation Center pool in Ward 8 to celebrate the occasion. The big question remains whether Gray will follow in the footsteps of former mayor Anthony Williams (pictured here) and do a start-of-the-season cannonball or opt out of it as Mayor Adrian Fenty did. Considering his rocky start and the constant political unease in the District, we hope he goes for the cannonball. Heck, he could even brand the thing (The One City Cannonball) or symbolically throw some of his more controversial hires into the water as a way to show that he’s trying to move past the scandals that have weighed down his first few months in office (The Crony Cannonballs).
Barry Shines at Redistricting Hearing: As we reported yesterday, yesterday’s hearing on redistricting the city’s wards was particularly testy, with councilmembers lobbing angry accusations at one another. The biggest star of the show, though, may well have been Councilmember Marion Barry (D-Ward 8), though, who not only threatened to sue if the proposed redistricting plan moved forward, but stubbornly refused to stop talking even as he was called out of order multiple times. TBD’s got the must-see video footage, including repeated attempts by Councilmember Phil Mendelson (D-At Large) to simply turn off Barry’s microphone.
Scallions, The New Stand-Alone School Snack: The Examiner is reporting that students at Turner Elementary school in the District were given a healthy, albeit odd snack on Tuesday — raw scallions. The scallions were meant as an ingredient for one of the school meals, but an apparent mix-up had cafeteria workers handing them to kids for their midday snack. School officials eventually noticed the slip-up and started handing out apples instead.
New Suspect Emerges in Killing of AU Professor: A former yoga instructor and businessman is now suspected in the murder of Sue Ann Marcum, an American University professor who was killed in her Bethesda home last fall, writes the Post. Jorge Rueda Landeros, who is Mexican-born and was an acquaintance of Marcum’s, is wanted for questioning, but he’s believed to have returned to Mexico, where he is writing letters to relatives in the area pledging his innocence.
Briefly Noted: Prince William County removes LBGT filter on school computers … Even Jimmy Buffett thinks the Jiffy Lube Live prohibition on tailgating is dumb … Two more teens escape from DYRS custody … Kwame Brown is wheeling and dealing with the best of ’em.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, Metro released the details of a fare hike and the Watergate Hotel was sold. In 2009, it looked like Councilmember Michael Brown (I-At Large) was planning on challenging Fenty and the Cleveland Park listserv provided more comic relief.
