Photo by Dan Dan The Binary Man.Good morning, Washington. In case you didn’t venture outside at all yesterday, it is sweltering out there. D.C. is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. this evening, with today’s highs hitting the mid 90s and the heat index approaching 105. It’s also a Code Orange air quality day. The National Weather Service reminds us that if you do need to be outside in this weather, frequent breaks and hydration are in order — and be sure to pay particular attention to the very old and the very young: the District operates several cooling centers where vulnerable residents can take a break to cool down. (Those looking to hop in to an outdoor pool after work are out of luck, however — the city’s outdoor pools don’t open on weekdays until June 21.)
Violent End To Memorial Day Weekend: Five people were shot, three of them dying, in three unrelated incidents around the District and Prince George’s County last night. The three shot inside the District were juveniles, two on the 1400 block of New Jersey Avenue NW, the other on the 3300 block of 14th Place SE. Police are still investigating all five incidents.
Bus Overturns, Kills Four Along I-95: A commercial tour bus overturned near the King’s Dominion amusement park along Interstate 95 early this morning, killing at least four people. There were 57 people on the bus this morning when it ran off the road and flipped over. No other vehicles were involved in the crash, but the investigation into the accident has caused an enormous backup along the busy interstate.
Briefly Noted: D.C. Council to discuss breathalyzer troubles tomorrow…When prison population estimates go wrong…Metro: now talking to you on Twitter!…Alexandria considering new tax district…Behind the scenes at the National Memorial Day Concert…That’s a lot of manure.
This Day in DCist: Last year, protesters gathered outside the Israeli Embassy in response to the deaths of nine pro-Palestinian activists.
