Photo by AlbinoFlea.Today, the D.C. Council’s Committee on the Judiciary is holding a hearing on the city’s issues with Breathalyzers. If you’ll recall, the city’s stopped using the alcohol monitors in February after it was discovered that they had been poorly calibrated for years. (One whistleblower even testified that “hundreds of people have gone to jail based on faulty information that went undetected for years.”)
The situation has been a real black eye for the District’s law enforcement — several DUI cases have been dismissed and the police now have to conduct roadside urine tests in order to determine the drunkenness of drivers they pull over. But at least the city is uncovering some interesting statistics while they get things in order! According to testimony delivered by the city’s Office of the Attorney General, 12 percent of drivers arrested for DUI after a urine test also tested positive for PCP. Well, at least we’re learning something.
