It’s tough waiting for cupcakes, especially when it gets really hot out there. But are people getting so anxious for their afternoon treat that they’re forgetting to watch for cars? Maybe! According to the Georgetown Dish, the insanely popular Georgetown Cupcake is now hiring off-duty cops to ensure the line doesn’t wander off into busy M Street traffic.

The main purpose of the officers is to make sure people mind themselves around the intersection of 33rd and M Streets NW, which can get messy when the line for the shop gets really crazy — but, of course, they’re not above keeping people in check, should cupcake-mania drive someone to criminal pursuits:

“They (the security guards) provide customer and employee security as well as help keep control of pedestrian traffic on the corner of 33rd and M Streets,” said Sophie LaMontagne, co-owner of Georgetown Cupcake with her sister, Katherine Kallinis.

The intersection is not simple to figure out for motorists or for pedestrians, and hasn’t become any easier with the heavy foot traffic of cupcake seekers.

[…]

“We have hired security guards at both our Georgetown and Bethesda locations, and they are present daily to monitor customer and employee security,” LaMontagne said in an e-mail to The Dish. “Customer and pedestrian safety is extremely important to us, so we put this system in place back in early March.”

Well, it’s incredibly relieving to know that I can freely waste my time waiting for a cupcake without the fear of assault or being hit by a car. Anyone care to take bets on the first time we’ll see such security at the heart of a plotpoint on D.C. Cupcakes?
