Photo by cstein96.Sure, it might have been rodent-infested, but the old Safeway on Rhode Island Avenue NE was still the grocery of choice for many Brookland residents before it closed in March 2010. And even though a Yes! Organic Market on 12th Street NE is a fine option for some, the residential neighborhood could certainly support a supermarket. How about Harris Teeter?
Jonathan O’Connell continues his tear on news from the International Council of Shopping Centers’ annual conference in Las Vegas with a report that the Teeter is eyeing a location near Catholic University:
City officials discussed the area with Harris Teeter representatives at the International Council of Shopping Centers conference in Las Vegas last month, in particular a $200 million mixed-use project on Catholic University’s south campus that is being planned by Abdo Development, the Bozzuto Group and Pritzker Realty Group. The officials were joined by staff from the Washington, D.C. Economic Partnership, the research and marketing organization that contracts with the city.
Obviously, everyone’s keeping pretty mum about the possibility; there also appears to be an issue with the development’s ability to house a supermarket. (“To put a grocery store in, it would require re-orientation of the project,” said a vice president for Abdo Development, who is working on the project.) But if there’s any grocer who could probably make it work, it’s Teeter, who hasn’t been shy about embracing smaller, urban formats in its three other locations around the city.
