Photo by Joe in DC.Good morning, Washington. It’ll be a busy day at the Wilson Building, even for June. This afternoon, the D.C. Council’s government operations committee will finally get its first crack at controversial Vince Gray hires Sulaimon Brown and Cherita Whiting. The hearing is scheduled to begin at 12:30 p.m. — Whiting will speak first, followed by Brown. Brown, who released money orders over the weekend which he claims the Gray campaign gave him to disparage then-mayor Adrian Fenty on the campaign, struck a deal with the committee to wrap things up by 7 p.m. and will not speak about “certain issues” under instruction from federal investigators. The Post put together a handy timeline of what the Council has uncovered to date, in case you need to get caught up.
Also today: D.C. Attorney General Irv Nathan will make an announcement regarding an investigation into Team Thomas, the nonprofit operated by Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr. The nonprofit is accused of receiving in excess of $200,000 since 2008 from organizations with business in front of the city; Thomas is the chair of the Council’s economic development committee.
Michael Brown Doubles Down: Was it unethical for At-Large Councilmember Michael A. Brown to push through legislation permitting online gambling in the District at the same time he was working for a law firm whose clients include lottery, casino and gaming vendors? That’s the argument of this Washington Post editorial, which states that Brown’s “failure to disclose” an association with Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge as the bill passed “is yet another troubling example of the secrecy that has surrounded the District’s decision to legalize and promote online poker and other games.” The law allowing intranet poker and gaming “hot spots” around the District was slipped into the supplemental 2011 budget last December without a public, Council or mayoral review.
D.C. Cop to Appear in Court on Murder Charge: Richmond Phillips, a MPD vice detective accused of shooting 20-year-old Wynetta Wright in the head last week in Prince George’s County, is scheduled to appear in court this afternoon. Phillips has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of Wright; he’s also alleged to have left the one-year-old child he had with Wright inside a car to die, though charges in the death of the child have not yet been filed. Phillips has been relieved of his police duties.

This Day in DCist: Last year, we wondered what business motorized advertisements had clogging up 14th Street and the man who designed Metro’s distinctive pylons said the rail system was too cluttered with signage.
