The District Department of Parks and Recreation will convene a meeting this evening to discuss renovations to the park at 11th and Monroe Streets NW, sometimes known as Trolley Turnaround Park.
DPR’s redesign of the park — which has long had a reputation around the neighborhood as a hangout for less-than-savory characters and was closed for a period last year due to lead contamination — aims to make the space a little bit more friendly with a playground, some ornamental trees and a more open plan. (The design is very similar to the back on Upshur Street.) But, as with most discussions revolving around the use of public space, not everyone is thrilled with the plan — for example, this poster on the Columbia Heights listserv causticly bemoaned the park’s lack of shade.
The proposed redesign can be viewed below; the meeting, one of several, will start at 6:30 p.m. this evening inside the Community Center at 15th and Girard Streets NW.
