Happy Father’s Day, Washington. Mayor Vince Gray, who has two children of his own, was presented with a bit of a Father’s Day gift from the press: new poll numbers from the Washington Post which, while certainly not very good, are strangely high considering everything the city’s been going on in D.C. over the last six months. 47 percent of D.C. residents still have “a favorable impression” of Gray, while a majority of the city’s African Americans still approve of the way he’s been doing his job. Certainly, it isn’t great news for the Mayor — there was a 24-point leap in disapproval, it’s tough to find a white resident who likes him, his first year in office has been so much more disastrous than former mayors, and his support is declining all across the city — but the poll seems to indicate that city residents see Gray as but one part of a larger issue: 15 percent of those polled told the Post that they believe government is the city’s most pressing issue, beating out even crime.

>> As opposed to the District’s government, the news about Metro is downright cheery, a flip from the usual narrative about the region’s largest transit agency. Metro obviously has a lot of work ahead of it, but the reaction to the progress WMATA is making — including a balanced 2012 budget which doesn’t include major service changes or fare increases — from is rather encouraging.

>> A man was found dead on the 5600 block of North Capitol Street NW last night; police believe that he was shot on the unit block of Longfellow Street NW.

>> Reminder: the D.C. Triathlon will be taking place again today near the National Mall — several street closures are planned, and your bus might be detoured slightly.

>> Rest in peace, Big Man.
