White Denim
TUESDAY
Delivering heart-stopping garage funk at a blistering pace, Austin’s White Denim lives in their van — such dedication to their live show has made them a must-see live act in Texas and elsewhere. After releasing a surprising collection of unreleased material on the last day of summer in 2010, the group is back with a proper full-length, titled D. New Jersey’s The Static Jacks will round out the solid double bill at the Rock And Roll Hotel with their blend of punk and soul. $12 advance, $14 day of show. 8 p.m.
>> Sonar (Baltimore): Nicole Atkins, Minerva Lions and Copper Canyons. $12. 8 p.m.
>> Wolf Trap: Aretha Franklin, Vance Gilbert. $45 in house, $25 lawn. 8 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
If you haven’t heard of Foster the People, you probably have heard their perennial summer jam “Pumped Up Kicks”. The breezy, outsider anthem has been making waves on blogs since last year and has taken the band from its humble Ohio roots to increasingly larger stages on festivals such as Sasquatch — and now, yet another sold out show at the 9:30 Club. Nashville’s Canon Blue and California’s Gardens & Villa open. Sold out. 7 p.m.
>> Black Cat Mainstage: Art Brut, Reptar. $15. 8 p.m.
>> Verizon Center: Sade, John Legend. $52-125. 7:30 p.m.
THURSDAY
Combining bits of cumbia, salsa, son montuno, Afro-funk, psychedelia, bolero and jazz, Austin’s Grupo Fantasma have spent the past 11 years creating a brand and style all their own. They’ll take over the 9:30 Club with their kinetic live show. Chopteeth AfroFunk Big Band, Funk Ark open. $18. 7 p.m.
>> Jammin’ Java: Garland Jeffreys. $20 advance, $25 day of show. 8 p.m.
>> Kennedy Center Millennium Stage: OK Go, Pomplamoose. Free if you received a ticket with their giveaway, but a stand-by line will open in the Kennedy Center Hall of Nations at 10 a.m. The concert itself will begin at 6 p.m.
FRIDAY
After “breaking up with God” on his solo debut in 2009, former Pedro the Lion frontman David Bazan is back with Strange Negotiations. Bon Iver multi-instrumentalist S. Carey opens the show at The Black Cat.
>> IOTA: Eilen Jewell, Sarah Levecque. $15. 8 p.m.
SATURDAY
Even if the release of J Mascis’ solo album Several Shades of Why might be the only Dinosaur Jr.-related release in 2011, don’t expect things to be quiet at the 9:30 Club as the legendary band performs their stand-out album Bug in its entirety. Henry Rollins will interview the band live on-stage and So Cal punk outfit OFF! will open. Bring earplugs — but it might be worth the hearing damage. $30. 8 p.m.
>> IOTA: Ben Sollee, Thousands. $15. 9 p.m.
>> Sixth & I Downstairs: Haley Bonar, Daniel Martin Moore, Holcombe Waller. $12 advance, $15 day of show. 8 p.m.
>> Black Cat Mainstage: Nick13 (of Tiger Army), Billy Woodward and the Senders. $13 advance, $15 day of show. 9 p.m.
>> Ottobar (Baltimore): Sloan, Hot Kid, Gary B and the Notions, Title Tracks. $15. 8 p.m.
SUNDAY
Cellist Ben Sollee wraps up his two-day residency at IOTA in Arlington on Sunday. The singer-songwriter’s distinctive, percussive playing might be his calling card, but his songs and the hooks within them have teeth that sink in, especially on the recently released Inclusions. Seattle’s Thousands will open. $15. 8 p.m.
>> Wolf Trap: Earth, Wind and Fire. $45 in-house, $30 lawn. 8 p.m.
