Photo by dracisk 365/365.I’m not sure if you guys caught it — okay, fine, I know you didn’t — but your trusty editor in chief had nothing better to do at 6 p.m. yesterday than take in Mayor Vince Gray’s new talk-show-type-thing on Channel 16.
Now, I don’t think any of the 13 people watching were really expecting too much from the show — which promised to “provide District residents with an inside look of their government” — but it was pretty awful. The Mayor did his best Charlie Rose impression he could, but not even a man as adept at interviewing people as Rose could have saved this ship. On the plus side, there was a nice variety of people involved in city government — MPD Chief Cathy Lanier, Parks and Rec director Jesus Aguirre, Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services BB Otero — though it wasn’t as if these people were riffing on current events. In fact, Gray’s role as host made it feel more like a performance review than anything else, like if David Letterman stopped inviting celebrities on his show and started talking to the guy who operates the camera about his job.
(Gray’s interviewing chops weren’t exactly helping matters either — at one point, he asked Otero: “What a fancy term, health and human services. What does that mean?”)
But the program wasn’t a total loss — it was the inspiration of some fine commentary from the myopically-oriented, none more enjoyable than suggestions of what to name Vince Gray’s non-existent house band.
Now, we know that the DCist commentariat wouldn’t want to miss out on the fun — leave your suggestions in the comments.
