Kids looking for summer work in the District find they’re the latest victims of the city’s ongoing budget crisis.

A $322 million budget shortfall led D.C. officials to the decision to scale back the number of positions available in its summer jobs program, which could make it more difficult for D.C. youth to find work.

Jobs are down from 22,000 last summer to just 12,000 this summer.

So, instead, “summer enrichment,” is all the rage, with Mayor Vince Gray touting the $650,000 in support for summer programs from retailer Wal-Mart, which is courting the District.

Still, some industrious teens are beacons of light in these dark times. Namely, 14-year-old Jonathan Holland and his 15-year-old brother Adam, who raked in $40,000 this past year with products like vicious vanilla and tiger’s blood. The duo have become a staple at the Farmers Market at 12th Street and Independence Avenue.
