You’re probably looking forward to a long, relaxing three-day weekend. But Metro maintanence can only take so much time off. Last week, we told you that WMATA was not planning on performing any maintenance on July 4 — but the system will be under repair for the first part of Independence Day weekend.

Beginning Friday night and running through closing early Sunday morning, the following segments of the Metrorail system will be single-tracking:

>> Red Line: between New York Avenue and Rhode Island Avenue (Friday night only)
>> Red Line: between Rhode Island Avenue and Fort Totten (Saturday only)
>> Red Line: between the Fort Totten and Takoma (midnight-3 a.m. on Sunday morning)
>> Blue/Orange Lines: between Eastern Market and Stadium-Armory (Friday night and all day Saturday)

WMATA is saying riders should factor in 20 minutes of extra time while traveling along these sections of track during the times noted.

If you’re hosting tourists this weekend, you’ll want to remind them that Metro’s Trip Planner won’t be displaying these delays. WMATA also has a helpful clearinghouse of information on the best ways to use the system on July 4, which might come in handy for those that don’t use the system regularly.

You can also expect a heightened security presence on Metro during the Fourth, including bag checks.
