Photo by Matt.Dunn.Good morning, Washington. Sure, it’s Monday. And yes, it looks like it’ll be unbearably humid out there. But it’s not everyday that you get a free Slurpee, now is it?
Anyone? Anyone? There’s a big question of who will take over Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas, Jr.’s chairmanship of the D.C. Council’s economic development committee. Not because there aren’t a lot of people interested, mind you. No, it’s because the pool of Councilmembers with the ethical chops to be put in charge of the committee that doles out billions of dollars in development money each year is quite shallow at the moment. The Examiner’s Freeman Klopott does the math, and figures there are two legitimate candidates for the job: Ward 4’s Muriel Bowser and new At-Large member Vincent Orange. Council Chair Kwame Brown is slated to make a decision on the committee reshuffling by the end of the week.
No Strippers For Ward 5: Ivy City residents are protesting the development of several new strip clubs in their neighborhood, reports WAMU. The dispute seemingly has everything you’d possibly want in a D.C. neighborhood battle — churches, an embattled Councilmember (Thomas), neighborhood associations, accusations that the city conspired to zone the area in secret, and so on. Juicy!
Forget It, Jake — It’s “Chinacorner”: The Post’s David Nakamura pens this interesting story about the dwindling number of Chinese residents in D.C.’s Chinatown. It’s an interesting read which focuses on the unique challenges faced by residents of the Wah Luck House at Sixth and H Streets NW — though for cartographic nerds like us, the biggest development is probably Nakamura’s declaration that “the city’s Chinatown is increasingly being reduced to ‘Chinacorner.'” “Chinablock” is dead, long live “Chinablock”!

This Day in DCist: In 2009, we wondered why it took a fatal accident on Metrorail to cause an uptick in bus ridership, while in 2008, HBO was thinking about bringing back the Washingtonienne pilot, Metro was getting more security cameras and the District had a heavyweight title contender.
