Eleanor Friedberger, best known as being one half of the Fiery Furnaces, came to town last night — the second night of her solo tour in support of her new album, Last Summer, which was released yesterday. With a full band in tow, Friedberger played a set of rocking, classic pop-inspired gems.
It seemed as if Friedberger and her band have been playing together for decades, merging soaring lyrics and brash rock ‘n’ roll passages. The album’s leading single, “My Mistakes“, and Fiery Furnaces’ “Tropical Iceland” were definite highlights of the evening. The intimate crowd ran appreciatively focused throughout the 14-song set, before Eleanor closed things out with a brand-new, week-old song. Playing by herself, the audience was grateful for the glimpse into what the future of her solo career may come to sound like.
Opening the evening were Baltimore favorites, Romania & the Jaabs. Roman Kuebler, head of The Oranges Band, led his crew through a hard hitting and straight to the point set. Romania began as a solo project for Roman and has since evolved into a 6-person powerhouse sounding much like a mix between Elvis Costello and the New Pornographers — and based on last night’s performance, we’d look out for these guys in the months ahead.
