Good morning, Washington. The fallout from yesterday’s Council reshuffling continues, now that observers have had a solid 24 hours to digest the news. The most scathing evaluation of Council Chair Kwame Brown’s decision to remove Ward 6 Councilmember Tommy Wells from his post as chairman of the Public Works and Transportation Committee comes from the editorial board of the Washington Post, which called Wells’ colleagues “too gutless to stand up” to Brown’s “petty politics.” Indeed, at least some of the blame for what went down inside the Wilson Building yesterday is being placed at the feet of Wells’ co-called progressive caucus, namely Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) and Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4), both of whom took advantage of Wells’ demotion to grab more lucrative political assignments. Of course, Brown — who finally released a statement late last night after allowing Wells to spin a martyr narrative (see also: this photograph) all day — still remains public enemy number one in the entire ordeal. What’s done is done, of course: Wells appears to be taking the news in stride (well, for the most part), and the local transportation community is readying themselves for Mary Cheh’s oversight.

Metro’s Sorry: WMATA has apologized to riders after the hot weather created a kink in the track, which caused quite a mess along the Red Line last night, as trains had to share one track between Silver Spring and Takoma. “Metro has an aggressive track inspection program that is used to detect any signs of track defects,” WMATA claimed in its apology.

Man Shot During Spring Road Robbery: Police say that a man was shot on the 1400 block of Spring Road NW around 10:40 p.m. last night. The man was approached by an armed assailant who demanded money; a struggle ensued, and the assailant shot the man before fleeing on foot. The man is expected to survive. The suspect is described as a young black male with a thin build and short black hair who was last seen running north on 16th Street NW — police are asking anyone with information to contact 202-727-9099. The incident took place near where three people were shot, two dead, over the weekend.
