Photo by furcafe. On Friday, we rounded up the latest news and moves from local brewers — but, of course, a beer scribe’s work is never done: Capitol City Brewing Company poured its last pint at its Postal Square location over the weekend, but will be making the move to Union Station this fall.
The shutdown of the brewers’ restaurant space at 2 Massachusetts Avenue NE took many by surprise, but City Paper’s Tammy Tuck has the news that brewer Micah Krichinsky has plans to open a new Cap City outlet inside Union Station in October. (UPDATE: Krichinsky emailed us this afternoon to clarify that the Company has “not confirmed our future location,” however.) While you’ll only have to wait until the fall to grab some frothy suds before hopping on your train, the large brewing vats which have become a trademark for Cap City won’t be making the trip across First Street, reports Tuck:
From now on, brewing operations for all Capitol City locations, and the company’s new beer-focused restaurant and bar, 901, which opened in the Penn Quarter in May, will be handled at the company’s Shirlington outpost.
Some of the equipment from Postal Square will be moved to Shirlington, but most of it will be sold or scrapped (you can actually buy a bunch of stuff through an online auction), which is probably for the best. Krichinsky, who took over brewing operations at Postal Square back in March, has spent the last several months tirelessly troubleshooting issues and obsessively cleaning in order to improve the quality of his beer there. At least to him, the hard work has paid off. “I’m really proud of the beer that is on for the closing,” he told me. “I wanted to send this place off right.”
Cap City’s 1100 New York Avenue NW location is unaffected by the move, so if you’re craving a Capitol Kolsch, you can always can grab one at that location until the Union Station location opens up.
