(AP Photo/John Bazemore)The Nationals had a somewhat rough weekend in Atlanta, suffering their worst loss of the season on Friday and blowing leads yesterday to drop the series finale. But the swing through the The Big Peach wasn’t a total loss — after all, Saturday’s game produced this priceless image, in which Jayson Werth stands mesmerized by a dude who ran on to the field in a wedding gown.
All-Star reliever Tyler Clippard, who was pitching at the time, was not as amused as Werth, however. The report from Nats beat writer Adam Kilgore:
The incident unfolded when the man in question landed on the outfield warning track and raised his arms in triumph. A pack of security guards immediately raced to the spot, tackled the offender and eventually put him in handcuffs. As they led the interloper off the field, many of the 42,456 at Turner Field began cheering loudly as he smiled back.
“Yeah, that was something I had never experienced before,” said Clippard, who took a few warmup pitches after the field was clear and then got Freddie Freeman to fly out to end the inning for his big league-leading 24th hold. “I mean, I’ve seen it happen, but I’ve never been on the field when it’s happened. It was kind of frustrating, threw off my rhythm a little bit, but you know, I got through it.”
Here’s video of the guy getting taken down, and Werth meandering over. Who knows, maybe he just wanted to tell Werth to knock off the facial hair shenanigans and just get back to the full beard.
