Photo by DC Metro People.Good morning, Washington. Apparently, all the news that’s fit to print doesn’t include the notation of the District of Columbia’s quadrants. The New York Times tackled the city’s vanishing African American majority yesterday, but probably could have focused a little more on their geography: the report contains a photo caption which notes that H Street NE is “in the Northwest area of Washington,” while the copy itself eschews including an identifying quadrant for any street contained within. Are there really no copy editors at the Times who have a working knowledge of the District’s street grid?
Fire at Washington Yacht Club: An early morning fire broke out at the Washington Yacht Club, destroying several boats. The blaze, which started around 2:45 a.m., took firefighters about 30 minutes to extinguish, and may have started on one boat before spreading to others. Booms have been placed down to prevent oil and gas from leaking into the Anacostia River.
Tune Inn Fundraiser Wildly Successful: Friday night’s fundraiser for the venerable Tune Inn, damaged by a fire last month, garnered an eyebrow-raising $30,000 for members of the bar’s staff. (No surprise, considering the overflow of people on hand; yours truly was in attendance, and was impressed at the bidding wars that developed — especially for a six-person booth, which went for $2,200.) The bar’s owner, Lisa Nardelli, said during the event that she plans to reopen the Capitol Hill watering hole by Labor Day.
WaPo Editorial Board on the Warpath: It was a rather opinionated weekend for the local paper of record’s editorial board. First, the board argued that the IMPACT system of evaluation for teachers is working. The 663 teachers deemed “highly effective” in this year’s results “is powerful evidence of the worth of IMPACT which, contrary to uninformed criticism from its opponents, is as much about recognizing the best teachers and helping those who can improve as it is about weeding out those who can’t teach,” the board writes. Then, last night, the paper basically told the people in charge of the Dulles rail extension to just get it done. (Though the assertion that local gas station magnate Joe Mamo should get a key to the city for a recent dip in the price of a gallon? Let’s not get too crazy, guys.)
Briefly Noted: A nice wrap of yesterday’s remarkable World Cup final from Sally Jenkins: “The World Cup has no magical powers than can make a tsunami and a nuclear meltdown un-happen. But it can console, and uplift and send a message home about fighting back, and you’d be one ugly American to begrudge them this victory.”…Pedestrian struck at 7th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue NW…Justice Department suing Maryland man for obstructing access to Planned Parenthood…D.C. charity founder, bank employee plead guilty to defrauding charity of $276,000 in contribution-matching scheme…Council will spend recess dealing with Sulaimon Brown, Harry Thomas…Ruff and Ready owner, despite facing eviction, remains upbeat: “I’m looking at it as an opportunity…I’ll be able to clear out 20 years of accumulation.”…Man struck by train near District Line…Someday, we’ll all just turn to dust.
This Day in DCist: Last year, Kwame Brown’s personal finances were being questioned, and we took a breath before diving into the city’s new online repository of health inspections. In 2009, readers overwhelmingly voted to name the park at 14th and Girard Streets NW “DC Voting Rights/Jumbo Slice®/Super Magical Black POTUS Symbolically Redesignated Dog Park/Vodka Bottle Recycling Station/Homeless Latrine/Chicken Bone Deposit Greenspace”.
