The subject of pedicabs was a hot one this weekend, after a pedicab driver was tased by a U.S. Park Police officer. That incident also sparked a wider discussion regarding the regulation of the vehicles — today, Mayor Vince Gray announced that the District Department of Transportation would begin doing just that in the very near future.

Currently, pedicabs are treated like bicycles, so drivers are subject to the same laws as regular, non-passenger-carrying cyclists are. But under the new regulations, Gray announced that pedicabs would have to install standardized braking systems, require the use of seatbelts and ride in lanes closest to the curb to enable motor vehicles to pass. A similar set of regulations was proposed back in April, though those were never actually implemented. WUSA9 reports that the Council will pursue legislation come the fall, though, so maybe they’re getting a little more serious than the last go-round.

When it comes to enforcement, the obvious comparison is with taxis — inside which seatbelt use is also required, though yours truly is hard-pressed to actually remember a time when a cab driver reminded him to buckle up before we hit the road. (Not that, you know, I ever forget to wear my safety belt or anything.) Will police be more vigilant when it comes to enforcing these rules because non-compliance will be theoretically easier to spot on pedicabs? Time will tell.
