MONDAY
Only two more weeks of Fort Reno? Say it ain’t so! Also, say that it will stay dry tonight. Title Tracks (whose latest we reviewed earlier today) already got stormed out of their appearance on July 11th and Office of Future Plans also got rained out of what was meant to be the season ending show of 2010. Let’s hope their night with the Akoma Drummers stays dry. Free, 7:15 p.m.
9:30 Club: Ellie Goulding, Bag Raiders. Sold out, 7 p.m.
Subterranean A: Pictureplane, Gatekeeper, Teengirl Fantasy. $10, 8:30 p.m.
TUESDAY
It may be billed as “punk rock summer camp”, but The Vans Warped Tour has taken an increasingly looser interpretation of what constitutes a “punk” band. In addition to the radio pop-punk schlock like Gym Class Heroes that has always defined the festival, there are some truly egregious excuses for music like Attack Attack!, a few outright pop bands like The Dance Party (remember them?), some touring workhorses like Less Than Jake and Relient K, a few bands like Street Dogs and Peelander-Z that we’d actually make the drive to watch and, wait…Yelawolf? That’s probably the best name on the bill, but how did he get on there? See them, a gazillion more bands and the kitchen sink at Merriweather Post Pavilion. $36, 11 a.m.
Comet Ping Pong: Paperhead, Bake Sale, Moon Freckles. $5, 9 p.m.
Black Cat: Viva Brother, 1,2,3. $10 in advance / $12 day of show, 8:30 p.m.
9:30 Club: Wanda Jackson & Imelda May. $25, 7 p.m.
WEDNESDAY
Moombahton was the BPM change that sparked a series of awesome DJ nights at the Velvet Lounge and simultaneously a worldwide movement. It’s also sparked multiple Moombahton Massive events at U Street Music Hall helmed by Dave Nada of D.C. natives Nadastrom. Wednesday is the fifth of those Moombahton Massives and will include DJ sets from Nadastrom, Thee Mike B, Sabo, DJ Orion and a live set from Zuzuka Poderosa. $5 / Free with RSVP, 9 p.m.
9:30 Club: Eels, Submarines, Elvis E. $25, 7 p.m.
Red Palace: Xylos, Jessica 6, Emoticon Dream. $8 in advance / $10 day of show, 8:30 p.m.
Black Cat: The Ambulars, Cigarette, Cloud Becomes Your Hand. $8, 8:30 p.m.
THURSDAY
Is it just us or has the Fort Reno lineup been particularly good this year? It’s been chock full of bands we already love and has introduced us to several more that have impressed us. (Seriously, did anyone else see Cat Jack?) While we’re particularly excited to see lo-fi garage act Foul Swoops, we expect that The OK Corral and The Burnside Shattered will impress us as well. Plus, it’s the famed “Night of 1000 Cakes.” Free, 7:15 p.m.
Red Palace: Avi Buffalo, Nik Freitas. $10 in advance / $12 day of show, 8:30 p.m.
9:30 Club: Sia, Oh Land, Ximena Sarinana. Sold out, 7 p.m.
FRIDAY
Boston’s mysterious dream-folk queen Marissa Nadler has just released her fifth album and will be casting her spell with dreamy (but blunt) songs at the Red Palace. Faces on Film open. $10, 10 p.m.
9:30 Club: U.S. Royalty, Birdlips, True Womanhood. $15, 8 p.m.
Black Cat: Girls Rock! DC Benefit featuring: Blackberry Belles (record release), Ugly, Spoonboy & The Papas. $10, 9 p.m.
SATURDAY
Missed The Cornel West Theory‘s set at Fort Reno a couple weeks ago? While ordinarily you might be SOL for at least a couple of months, you have another chance in July as they’ll be playing at U Street Music Hall. If you’ve never seen them, the Theory blends elements of jazz and spoken word with ’90s hip-hop grooves (think De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and Digable Planets) and ’90s hardcore’s righteous social conscience. Plus, Kokayi, Gods’Illa and D.J. Underdog are opening. $10, 7 p.m.
Velvet Lounge: Hammer No More The Fingers, Grass Is Green, Club Scout. $8, 10 p.m.
SUNDAY
She’s one of country’s original pioneers — and even after several decades full of several impersonators, Dolly Parton remains an original and thoroughly entertaining performer. She’ll be at Wolf Trap. $60 in house / $35 lawn, 8 p.m.
