Everyone else: WMATA will soon be moving from its current official handle (@metroopensdoors) to the far more Twitter-friendly @wmata.
Last night, the transit agency announced the switch — via Twitter, duh — and noted that the @metroopensdoors account would be “decommissioned.” So what’s this mean for you? Well, chances are that many of you are already following @wmata — before the agency actually started replying to some tweets, there was some confusion about which account was the official one. (An issue we’re all too familiar with around these parts, yes.) The transition should be seamless, so you shouldn’t actually have to take any action to keep learning about Metro disruptions in real time — but hey, just in case the intertubes spring a leak, well, now you know.
It appears as if the agency is planning on using the @MetroForward account it created a few weeks ago for more forward-thinking tweets, while the @wmata account will be used for the day-to-day information. The agency just hired Brian Anderson from Philadelphia’s SEPTA, in part to helm communications with riders via social media channels — here’s hoping Anderson will be able to put the extra few characters to good use.
