If you thought that the U.S. Postal Service was done making cuts to its brick-and-mortar operations, well, you were mistaken: word comes today that the USPS is now considering shutting down around ten percent of its retail outlets nationwide. The agency has put together a list of 3,653 branches — including 19 postal stations inside the District and dozens in Maryland and Virginia — which could be closed over the next year or two.
Now, we already knew that the Mid City station was overdue for the chopping block, but the list of offices under review by USPS has increased more than twofold in the six months since that news surfaced in January.
The agency has announced plans to replace some of the branches with “Village Post Offices”, which would offer postal services inside grocery stores, libraries and government offices.
