A group of athletes, celebrities and local media personalities gathered at Kastles Stadium along the Southwest waterfront yesterday for the Celebrity Soccer Challenge to benefit the Mia Hamm Foundation — the event, which was Hamm and former major league All-Star Nomar Garciaparra, was headlined by the likes of Kobe Bryant, John Carlson, D’Angelo Hall, several members of the United States Women’s National Team, benefitted families in need of marrow or cord blood transplants. It was the fourth year for the celebrity match, though this year’s held special appeal due to the participation of players like Alex Morgan, Tobin Heath, Ali Krieger and Heather O’Reilly, fresh off their inspiring run to the Women’s World Cup final in Germany and the involvement of FC Barcelona, fresh off a friendly against Manchester United which broke a regional attendance record for a soccer match.
