Drink of the Week: Bloody Mary
Where: Logan Tavern/The Heights, The Source

It took me a long time to like Bloody Marys. The combination of tomato and lemon juice with vodka reminded me too much of the awful cans of V-8 from my youth. But over the last few years, I’ve grown to like the flavors of what I still consider to be boozy drinkable salsa. Interestingly, some food chemists have declared the Bloody Mary to be the “world’s most complex cocktail” for its combination of sweet, sour, salt and spice.

And perhaps that’s not surprising, given the number of variations of Bloody Marys, which is part of what makes the drink so exciting — getting to turn your drink in to a veritable salad or crazy gazpacho. As a Baltimoron, I have to say that one of my favorites is at Baltimore’s Woodberry Kitchen, where the drink is served with a head-on Old Bay shrimp, and a slice of candied bacon. Oh, and a Natty Boh shooter.

But in D.C., I love that the EatWell restaurants Logan Tavern and The Heights allow you to customize your Bloody, allowing you to choose your spirit, spice level and various accoutrements such as beef jerky or crabmeat. And you can’t go wrong with the three varieties of Bloody Mary at The Source — one with chili paste and lime, another with Old Bay and a mini half smoke, and a traditional take with horseradish and olives.

Where is your favorite place to get your hair-of-the-dog Bloody Mary?
