We here at DCist love our animals, particularly those who can use a helping hand. Unfortunately, I doubt DCist HQ can adopt all these furballs. I’ve seen our editor-in-chief’s apartment and it’s a tad too small to accommodate. But this weekend there will be plenty of cats and dogs available for adoption across the area, as two local organizations are holding adoption events to cap off the coming end of the summer.
The Washington Animal Rescue League is hosting a 33-hour “Adopt-a-thon,” going straight until 8 p.m. Sunday night at its 71 Oglethorpe Street, NW location. As we’ve seen before during these pushes, the League is somewhat reducing fees for adoption, allowing a “pay what you will” fee during the event. Altogether, the facility is at full capacity, with over 120 cats and dogs housed and available to go to a caring home.
The Fairfax County Animal Shelter is holding it own “ExtravaCATza! 2011” through the end of August. This particular extravaganza holds special significance as this past June the shelter was forced to euthanize its entire population of cats after a viral outbreak would not abate. Since then, the facility has taken extra steps to clean and sterilize the housing area, and has reopened to operations. The shelter is located at 4500 West Ox Road in Fairfax and offering a free spay or neuter to the first 100 cats adopted.
And don’t forget, The Washington Humane Society holds events all year long.
