Have you noticed light poles around the District now offering an environmentally conscious tilt? That’s the idea behind the Urban Forest Project, which has arrived in the District with “a forest of thoughtful images.”

As part of the project — a unique partnership between the District Department of Transportation, the Corcoran College of Art and Design, AIGA DC and the Downtown DC Business Improvement District that was funded by a grant from the USDA Forest Service and the BID — 100 banners were designed by local artists, many of them college and high school students, and hung up around town earlier this week.

“We hope this project will highlight the importance of growing a healthy urban tree canopy and draw attention to the excellent work done day in and day out by our Urban Forestry Administration,” DDOT Director Terry Bellamy said in a statement.

The banners — the complete collection of which you can view at the Urban Forest Project’s website — all play on local fixtures, whether that’s a version of the Iwo Jima Memorial which replaces the American flag with a tree, a banner which uses Metro lines as a tree trunk, or a banner which depicts the branches of a cherry blossom tree as the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers. You can also watch some of the artists talk about their designs for the banners here.
