Photo by Dan Dan The Binary Man.Good morning, Washington. Ward 5 Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. used the D.C. Children and Youth Investment Trust Corp. — an independent nonprofit created in 1999 by the D.C. Council to determine which charities can best serve District youth — as the middleman in his mishandling of city funds. But now, a Washington Post investigation into the organization shows that Thomas is hardly the only Councilmember to use the organization to guide funds to friendly charities. (The Council started cracking down on earmarks in 2009.) The Post report — which digs hard into Thomas, Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), Yvette Alexander (D-Ward 7) and former mayor Adrian Fenty — notes that funds directed to the trust have been used by Councilmembers and the mayor’s office to guide donations to political donors and pet projects in individual wards; the organization’s reporting process is also very poorly managed.
Metro Deputy GM Gets Big Bonus: Despite testifying in front of the D.C. Council that they did not hand out “bonuses” or “special award pay” to high-ranking officials in 2010, Kytja Weir reports that WMATA Deputy General Manager Dave Kubicek received a $30,000 that year, mostly covering a $2,500 monthly housing allowance. That bonus is on top of several large cash bonuses handed out to high-ranking employees which were uncovered in April.
Deadly Car Crash Near United Medical Center: Two people were killed this morning on the 1300 block of Southern Avenue SE after the vehicle they were riding in hit a telephone pole, split in half and then burst into flames. The accident took place outside the United Medical Center, and forced authorities to shut down traffic for hours.
Body Pulled From Anacostia: D.C. authorities pulled a dead body from the Anacostia River yesterday afternoon; police had not yet determined a cause of death, and the man’s identity has not yet been released.
