What: “Ode to the Watermelon,” featuring 21st Amendment
Where: Pizza Paradiso, all locations
When: Thursday, August 18, 11:30 a.m.
With the summer weather becoming much more bearable, the idea of summer food paired with great beer becomes that much more appetizing when you’re not concerned about only eating what will cool you down. Pizza Paradiso is offering a menu highlighting one of America’s essential summer picnic items: the watermelon. Three 21st Amendment beers will be paired with the items and all pairings are available individually, or $25 for the three-course ensemble.
Menu:
— Watermelon, heirloom tomato, avocado salad paired with six-ounce Brew Free or Die IPA ($6)
— Watermelon, artichoke, pine nut, feta pizza paired with twelve-ounce Hell or High Watermelon Wheat ($16)
— Watermelon tiramisu paired with six-ounce Back in Black ($6)
What: Starr Hill Beer 101 Class
Where: Iron Horse, 507 7th Street NW
When: Thursday, August 18, 8 p.m.
We aren’t born with knowledge. Many beer snobs may make it out that way and try to hide their days of thinking Sam Adams Lager was the greatest beer in the world, only to trash it a few years later because it isn’t a Belgian nonuple aged in the Titanic with hops imported from Valhalla. We beer nerds know this isn’t what good beer is about, so it makes me happy when there are events catered to all levels of beer knowledge. It creates a welcoming environment that fosters relationships, instead of intimidation over who has the most obscure (and usually irrelevant) info to “win” the beer snob pissing contest. Iron Horse will be hosting an introductory 101 style class led by Starr Hill owner and brewer Mark Thompson. Starr Hill glasses, shirts and other items will be given out. This is a great way to learn from a knowledgable brewer in a comfortable setting and meet other people interested in craft beer.
What: Chocolate City Beer launch party
Where: RFD (backroom), 810 7th Street NW
When: Thursday, August 18, 9 p.m.
Another brewery in the District! Chocolate City Beer has finally landed and is bringing some of their beers with them to RFD. Come for $4 pints all night, including their Cerveza Nacional de la Capital, described as “a salute to our Latin American neighbors and their influences on the American beer world. Our take on a dark, malty, creamy, smooth and slightly roasty Vienna Lager.” DJ O’Scool will also be on hand to spin the tasty jams.
