During D.C. Beer Week, we will be highlighting some exciting beers and events to attend every day throughout the week.

What: Trinity Brewhouse Takeover
Where: Capitol Lounge, 231 Pennsylvania Avenue SE
When: Friday, August 19, 4 p.m.

Coming into my drinking age while living in New England, I was lucky enough to visit Trinity on a number of occasions. Its odd wood interior with bright décor is somewhere between an Austrian farmhouse and a ’90s coffee shop (thankfully, no Ani Difranco). So when I was speaking with chef de cuisine Maria Evans earlier in the year about her connection to Trinity, I was excited about the potential of getting some of their beers here in D.C. since they rarely leave Rhode Island. Capitol Lounge will be hosting Phoenix Magazine’s Best Brewpub 10 years running, serving up the Mercy Brown, Decadence Imperial IPA, Heffe Wisse, Pilsner and Strawberry Bomb.

What: D.C. Homebrewers Association Homebrew Competition
Where: The Red Palace, 1212 H Street NE
When: Saturday, August 20, 12-4 p.m. (Nerd Nite, 6:30 p.m.)

The D.C. Homebrewers Association has a strong group of brewers. They were cordial enough to invite me to their last meeting, which had many delicious beers which spoke volumes about the skill of our homebrewing community. On Saturday afternoon, The Red Palace hosts a friendly beer battle between the group; $10 gets you access to the DC Beer Week homebrew competition and early admission to Nerd Nite, which follows the competition. Nerd Nite speakers include Greg Engert (ChurchKey, Rustico) speaking about some of the misconceptions about beer and its origins, Brandon Skall (DC Brau) on how to start up a brewery, and Bill Stewart (Dr. Dremo’s) talking about the evolution of fermented drinks that led us to what we now consider beer.

What: Mid-Atlantic Brewery Night
Where: Smith Commons, 1245 H Street NE
When: Saturday, August 20, 7 p.m.

Smith Commons’ week-long tour of the United States of Beer culminates in a Mid-Atlantic celebration, featuring breweries from the region. $5 pints, $15 bombers, and $5 regional themed small food pairings.
