Dish of the Week: Fried clam strips
Where: Freddy’s Lobster + Clams

If you grew up on the East Coast, you’re likely to associate summer with certain foods. If you visited the Delmarva coast during the summer, your list might include Fisher’s Popcorn, Candy Kitchen salt water taffy and Thrasher’s Fries. But for visitors to New England, summer brings lobster rolls, steamers and fried clams.

The recently opened Freddy’s Lobster + Clams in Bethesda brings those tastes further south. In particular, I enjoy their fried clam strips — lovely little crisp bundles of salinity. Stripping some of the batter away reveals a tender little clam without any of the anticipated rubbery texture. A kid’s size clam strip boat with chips is still substantive for only $5. If fried food isn’t your thing, you can join in the click-clacking of empty clam shells dropping with a bucket of steamers.

But best of all, your seafood will come together nicely with a fairly substantial (for Montgomery County) and nicely priced beer list. And if you’re in the mood for a cocktail, you’ll also find bartender Chris Cunningham, who was last at Galileo III, behind the stick.
