Photo by pablo.raw.International wrangling sparked anew this week when The Atlantic reported that the Cuban Interests Section (aka, the Cuban Embassy) plans to open “Hemingway’s Bar,” a Cuban-themed watering hole, in its building near Columbia Road and 16th Street NW. Could the long entrenched embargo be on the verge of toppling? Not a chance, and at best the “international wrangling” can be dismissed as hyperbole.
But so far, any gossip and chatter over the opening has largely focused on the possible implications between the U.S. and Cuba’s chess-like diplomatic relations. In reality, we should be more concerned with the arrival of another Cuban establishment in our area. Steve Clemons reports that since any form of commerce must not be conducted, the drinks will flow pro bono.
Free Hemingway Daiquiris and Cuba Libres? Si senor, and we’ll pass on the mojitos while you’re at it. But this could lend the possibility of trying some authentic Cuban cuisine, arguably by those wholly interested in spreading the good word of Cuba. Café Cubano, Cubano sandwiches, ropa vieja, frijoles negros; all are welcome additions to D.C.
