Good morning, Washington. Pack those lunches, grab those books and fire up the buses — it’s the first day of school in the District and Prince George’s County. Some 200,000 children will be heading back to classes today around the region. In the District, its also the first day for sparkling new facilities housing Eastern, H.D. Woodson and Anacostia High Schools, as well as several other schools which have benefitted from massive renovations. It’s also the first day of what will be Chancellor Kaya Henderson’s first year in charge of the city’s schools — Henderson told the Times that “all systems are a go” for the first day of school, having made checks on 123 schools and visiting the homes of chronically absent students to try and get them back.

Jack Evans Likes Sports: A review of spending records by the Washington Post shows that Evans (D-Ward 2) has spent $135,897 from his constituent service fund on sports tickets over the last decade, spawning another round of calls for there to be reform on the use of such funds. The money spent on sporting events is about one-quarter of the entire amount spent by Evans during the time period, and includes season tickets for the Capitals, Wizards and Nationals. The spending is not illegal, and Evans defended the spending by stating that “it’s appropriate to support those teams and give [tickets] to constituents who otherwise may not be able to get to a game.” Of course, Evans also has free access to the Council’s luxury boxes at both the Verizon Center and Nationals Park.

Were You Riding Amtrak Train 171 Last Wednesday?: If so, you should probably double-check your immunization records. Virginia health officials announced yesterday that a person riding that train was carrying measles, and may have passed it on to other passengers. Measles is highly contagious, and initial symptoms include fever and cough.

King Memorial Officially Opens: If you didn’t get enough looks of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial from your desk on Friday, it officially opens to the general public at 11 a.m. today. The King Memorial is the first on the Mall to honor an individual who wasn’t President.

Briefly Noted: Police seek person of interest in connection to shooting of toddler…American University only D.C. college to earn perfect score on LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index…Gray, Gandhi subpoenaed in lottery lawsuit…Emails to the Washington Post’s ombudsman “are racist, sexist, creepy, and threatening and contain so many references to unusual uses of bodily orifices that pornographers and psychiatrists could have a field day with them.”

This Day in DCist: Last year, 31-year-old Neil Michael Godleski was shot and killed in Petworth; back in 2008, Ben’s celebrated its 50th anniversary and Statehood Green party members were miffed about the Democratic Party’s failure to endorse full statehood.
