Good morning, Washington. Last night, I was enjoying a beer at the first-floor bar inside Little Miss Whiskey’s Golden Dollar. There were three people sitting at the bar — myself, a man sitting a few seats away from me down the dimly lit bar, and the bartender, bathed quietly in the light of the refrigerator. Normally, this seems like the kind of situation in which such strangers would engage in conversation, or, at the very minimum, some brand of awkward small talk. Instead, each of us, myself included, were buried deep in our iPhones, choosing to eschew interpersonal engagement in favor of the little black box that, more and more, envelopes our entire social existence. So, in short: yeah, Steve Jobs’ resignation is kind of a big deal.

Most Schools Reopen: Yesterday, city officials announced that, after a thorough inspection of the city’s schools, most would reopen for classes today. This morning, DCPS updated that, noting that School Without Walls is the only school with more serious issues that remains closed today. Columbia Heights Education Campus, damage to which had been singled out by Mayor Vince Gray and others during a press conference yesterday, was found to have “more of a cosmetic issue than a structural problem.” Fixing the schools will cost the city about $10 million from its contingency reserve fund. While we’re on the topic of schools, Jonetta Rose Barras pens a very interesting story on the subject of education decisions made by D.C.’s black middle class.

D.C.-Bound Bus Crashes: Around a dozen people suffered injuries after a Washington Deluxe coach crashed on the New Jersey Turnpike yesterday afternoon. Two people, the driver and one passenger, were in critical condition after the crash. it doesn’t appear as if this accident will spawn the same kind of fallout as the one which killed several people in Virginia earlier this year — the driver in yesterday’s incident was reportedly well-rested and had all of his licenses up to date.

More Streetcar Updates: Earlier this week, we noted that the District Department of Transportation was planning to roll out its H Street/Benning Road streetcar line in mid-2013, rather than later that year. But that doesn’t mean that the project isn’t hitting hiccups. Lydia DePillis provides us with a current overview of the project, noting that things are definitely behind schedule — mostly due to the fact that there still isn’t a settlement on how to connect the damn thing to Union Station. (The city could use some funding help from the feds, too.) “This is the first time we’ve built a streetcar in our lifetime. It’s gonna take a lot of help from a lot of people,” DDOT Director Terry Bellamy tells DePillis.

Briefly Noted: Man stabbed in Chinatown, suspect taken in custody…Virginia nuclear plant near earthquake epicenter still shut down…Looking back on the District’s first female driverJury’s still out on whether students actually care about Catholic University’s same-sex dorms…Anything you can do, I can do better: government edition.

This Day in DCist: Last year, Ken Cuccinelli declared war on Craigslist, and the city’s elections board refused to allow Adrian Fenty-supporting independent party voters to switch parties and vote in the Democratic primary.
