Where: Duffy’s, The Big Hunt, Looking Glass Lounge
After a late evening of drinking last night, I found myself craving buffalo wings. But it seems that D.C. has a dearth of good buffalo wing places, perhaps because they are displaced by Mambo sauce wings. But the spicy, vinegary, salty fried goodness is just what I need to go with booze.
To me, the ideal buffalo wing is fried, but not dredged in batter topped with a mixture of butter and a vinegary hot sauce. All the variations? Psh. With wings, I am a traditionalist. (Though I do not object to the wings being finished on a grill like the ones at Hard Times.) But I still struggle with finding my perfect wings though there are some solid ones around town. Duffy’s Irish Pub is the standard for wings in the District, offering an affordable plate of tasty fried wings that are as reliable as the sunrise. The ones at The Big Hunt do quite nicely, especially when they are 15 cents each from 7-11 p.m. on Tuesdays. And if Looking Glass Lounge is still serving the same garlicky wings from when it was still Temperance Hall — the pinnacle of spicy crisp-skinned tastiness served with house-made blue cheese sauce — they’re well worth the trip up or down Georgia Avenue.
Are there other buffalo wings around town I should explore? Let us know your favorites in the comments.
Small Bites
Read a good wine
Tutoring center 826DC is hosting a wine tasting on September 15 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The tasting and snacks are sponsored by Cork. Tickets are $45.
When the Saints Go Marching In
New Orleans Saints fans can watch their team take on the Green Bay Packers in their first game of the year on September 8 at The Cajun Experience in Adams Morgan. You’ll be able to snack on free hors d’ouerves from 6-8 p.m., including gator sliders, boudin balls, Cajun hot wings, crawfish pies and buffalo wings. Beer prices will go down $1 every time the Saints score, and go up 50 cents every time the Packers score. The event will also feature the introduction of Abita Honey Rye.
Dim some
While I’m not a huge fan of the dimsum at Ping Pong Dim Sum, I’m a sucker for a good deal. To celebrate the opening of their 1 Dupont Circle NW location, Ping Pong will be hosting a grand opening party on September 15, 7-11 p.m. For $35 you’ll gain access to an open bar and hors d’ouerves. Not too shabby.
