Photo by WilliamMarlowThe official dedication ceremony for the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial planned for this weekend was postponed because of Hurricane Irene, but the Associated Press reports that dozens of people still visited the memorial this morning on the 48th anniversary of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
National Park Service spokesman Bill Line told the AP that some water “splashed up” onto the memorial from the Tidal Basin, but there was no damage from the storm. According to Line, memorials on the Tidal Basin are designed to withstand flooding.
