Good morning, Washington. Hurricane Irene has now exited the United States, leaving a ton of water, a whole bunch of downed trees, some very happy editors at the Weather Channel’s website and billions of dollars in damage in her wake.

Unlike many regional school districts, most D.C. schools — save for 14are open today, as are all D.C. government offices. On the travel front: there are a few roads which remain closed around the city, and a few bus detours to cope with. If you were still waiting to use Amtrak to get out of town, you’ll be able to get as far as Philadelphia and to some places south of town today, but will have to keep waiting for service further along the Northeast Corridor. Washington’s airports have been open since Sunday, though flights to locations hit hard by Irene have quite a backlog to work through.

And, of course, there remains a large group of people in the District who are still without power. Pepco currently reports 19,348 D.C. customers without electricity at the moment. The utility says they have 2,400 people working on the restoration effort — but, hey, at least you can’t say they didn’t warn us.

Locals Among Hurricane Fatalities: Irene not only caused severe damage along the East Coast — it carried a heavy human toll. Among the 24 fatalities in eight states over the last few days, are a 15-year-old Manassas Park girl who died in a North Carolina car crash, and an 85-year-old in Maryland’s Queen Anne’s County. Thankfully, the District did not experience any casualties over the weekend due to the storm.

P.G. County Officials Search For Boy’s Parents: Do you know this kid? Found roaming yesterday afternoon on the 2300 block of Vermont Avenue in Landover, Prince George’s County police have not been able to locate his parents. The boy was placed into foster care until his parents or guardian could be found — anyone with information should contact police at 301-772-4425.

Fatal Shooting Near Dunbar High: WJLA reports that D.C. cops are investigating a Sunday shooting which left one dead and another injured on the 200 block of N Street NW. No suspects have been identified; the location of the shooting is near both Dunbar High School and the adjacent Dunbar Recreation Center.
