Photo by Maryland Route 5.Earlier this month, we passed along the news that the Wonder Bread/Hostess Cake Factory at 641 S Street NW in Shaw was being considered for inclusion on the D.C. Inventory of Historic Sites as it underwent redevelopment. Now we know how new owner Douglas Development would like to update the site.
DCMud reports that designs for the 60,000-square-foot space call for the addition of another story on top of the current structure. The design — which is meant to look like a “barge stacked with shipping containers,” according to the architect — includes some flexibility for something fun to move in to the plot, which is located but a block away from the Shaw Metro station:
Retail space in the basement could be turned into a “cool underground” establishment, says Rosen, such as a bar, billiard hall, or restaurant. No retailers have been signed, as the project will be speculatively built, but Paul Millstein of Douglas says he expects something good to fall in place, considering the uniqueness of the building, and what he considers a “very cool project.”
Should be interesting to see what develops here. I guess the only thing left to do is decide on what we’re going to call the new structure. The Twinkie? The Loaf? The Fluffernutter Arms?
