Virginia’s wine industry — the territory of such luminaries as Donald Trump — is booming. The Associated Press reports today that Governor Bob McDonnell has announced record sales of the red and white stuff in fiscal year 2011. (In May, the Commonwealth officially instituted a law allowing people to bring wine they purchased into restaurants, which probably isn’t hurting the state’s overall consumption.) The news stands in contrast to estimates by the District’s Chief Financial Officer, which estimate that tax revenues from alcohol in the District are estimated to decline over the next several years. (Personally, I blame the rise in popularity of tobacco-infused cocktails.)
