Photo by mofoThe Washington Examiner reports that two employees in the District’s Department of Environment were arrested in a sting for demanding bribes to overlook the illegal dumping of hazardous asbestos material from an apartment near the Southwest Waterfront on the 300 block of P Street SW.
Joe L. Parrish, 51, and Gregory A. Scott, 59, are facing charges of soliciting and accepting a bribe, and they face up to 15 years if convicted.
Scott told the manager of the general contractor that he had found improper handling and containment of hazardous material at the apartment building, and then returned to the building with his supervisor, Parrish, to explain to the manager that the general contractor was facing a $300,000 fine and jail time for the violations.
Scott and Parish then told the manager, who was cooperating with the FBI, that they would destroy their report if the management company compensated them. The manager then paid Scott and Parish $2,500 each.
The transaction was recorded on audio and video tape.
