Photo by Sanjay Suchak.Good morning, Washington. Welcome to “Terrible Tuesday” — the day after Labor Day which is the first day that everyone around the region is trying to get to work and school at the same time. A few accidents and standing water aren’t making things any easier. Of course, Metro — which finished its Labor Day track work on time this morning — hasn’t been affected by the public’s return to the roads en masse; if you’re a rail commuter, relish in it this morning.
Think Pink: We’ve been calling the Metro extension to Dulles International Airport the “Silver Line” for years now. But Lance Wyman, who is redesigning the transit system’s iconic map to include the new line (and plenty of other changes), doesn’t necessarily like the tone, and would prefer instead to mark the new airport line with a “cool, pale pink” hue he’s dubbed “cherry blossom.” WMATA has released a draft version of the new map — we’ll have some additional thoughts on the map later this morning, so stay tuned.
Strasburg Returns: The Nationals can control pretty much every aspect of pitcher Stephen Strasburg’s return to the majors — making sure he pitches at home against less-than-elite competition and in front of large, welcoming crowds. But they can’t control the weather. Strasburg’s re-debut could be washed out tonight, as heavy rain and thunderstorms left over from former Tropical Storm Lee will present flood challenges to the region today. (Tomorrow, too.)
Presented Without Context: “Bill Barnhart, dressed in a grass skirt and a coconut bra, said he won’t be returning to Jiffy Lube Live under the new restrictions. ‘We’ve been coming here to Buffett shows for, what, six, seven years?’ said the Fairfax County resident. ‘I’ve never seen anything like this where there there’s nobody here. It used to be a festival. There’d be a party, a good crowd, a friendly crowd.'”
Briefly Noted: Alexandria’s Black Widow breaks her own world record for eating chicken wings…Police seek suspect in Frederick robberies…Postmaster heading to Congress to ask for mercy; several local post offices are on the chopping block…Anyone in the market for a 43-carat diamond?
This Day in DCist: In 2009, WMATA took offense to Washington Post claims there was “no evidence” safety precautions had been put into place; in 2007, people rushed to buy a piece of the Watergate Hotel and former D.C. first lady Effi Barry died.
