Good morning, Washington. If you’re wondering how much the recent 5.9-magnitude earthquake cost the District in terms of damage, the final tally is still being determined. But according to the Washington Times, city officials have already set aside $10 million for repairs to school buildings and other public facilities that may have been damaged by the shaking. The money — $5 million for the D.C. Department of Real Estate Services and $5 million for the Office of Public Education Facilities Maintenance — will come from contingency funds and have to be paid back by 2013; some of it will likely go towards fixing the 13 public schools that were red-flagged in the wake of the earthquake. The city is also assessing damage from Hurricane Irene, for which it could get up to 75 percent reimbursed by the federal government because of Mayor Vince Gray’s declaration of an emergency before the storm hit last week.

Metro Looks to Contractors to Speed Escalator Repairs: No one is trying to undersell the enormity of the task Metro faces in fixing the system’s perpetually stalled escalators, least of all WMATA General Manager Richard Sarles. According to the Post, Sarles is planning on bringing on outside contractors to do preventative work on 54 escalators and 20 elevators, as Metro’s 200-person in-house team continues the monumental task of repairing one of every six escalators in the system. (All told, there are 588.) The initiative, which will be proposed to the Metro board on Thursday, is part of a larger $153 million plan to replace or rehabilitate 180 escalators and elevators.

Rhee and Johnson Finally Tie the Knot: When you’re out there trying to reform America’s educational system, getting married can wait. But the waiting seems to have ended over the weekend for former D.C. Schools Chancellor Michelle Rhee, who married longtime boyfriend and mayor of Sacramento Kevin Johnson in a small ceremony in Tennessee, reports WTOP. The wedding was long-awaited; Rhee and Johnson originally planned to get married around this same time last year, going so far as to send invitations for the nuptials. According to the Sacramento Bee, Johnson’s brother served as his best man, while Rhee included her two daughters in the ceremony.

Add This to the List of Things Being Investigated in the District: A proposal to allow Internet gambling. According to the Examiner, Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) wants the city’s Inspector General to look into how the proposal stealthily made its way into the 2012 budget late last year. Needless to say, the Post’s editorial board should be happy.

Briefly Noted: How you know the weather’s bad: the storm walls go up at the Washington Harbour in Georgetown … Prince George’s County officials hope that new student housing in College Park can help improve the area … Food trucks gain a libertarian ally … Home-schooled students in Virginia may gain access to school sports.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, the mayoral campaign heated up as Vince Gray rolled out an anti-Adrian Fenty website, the District’s Tax Amnesty Program proved that nicely saying “please” doesn’t always work and a mural on a Cleveland Park 7-Eleven was painted over.
