This weekend, Howard and Morehouse are rekindling a football rivalry which had fallen dormant. It’s an exciting time for alumni of the two schools, what with all the revelry surrounding the game, which takes place tomorrow at RFK Stadium. Both schools’ marching bands will certainly be out in full force, and the matchup between the two Historically Black College and Universities is drawing prominent celebrities like Sean “Diddy” Combs and Jermaine Dupri to our fair city.

Just don’t expect the actual game to be all that exciting.

Howard and Morehouse have played 33 times since 1923. In only 12 of those matchups, the final score has been within seven points. (That includes five games played between 1923 and 1958, a time when scoring boatloads of points was hardly the norm.) In fact, Howard usually makes short work of Morehouse — notable lopsided contests include a 52-0 rout in 1926, a 44-6 beating in 1964, a 33-0 tally in 1965, a 49-14 score in 1986, a 54-7 drubbing in 1987, a 37-10 result in 1989, a 44-7 hammering in 1990, and shutouts in 1993, 1996 and 1997 during which the Bison outscored the Maroon Tigers by a combined score of 135-0.

Given that record, I suppose we can hardly blame Morehouse from waiting 14 years to schedule Howard again.
