Good morning, Washington. This week our esteemed editor-in-chief Aaron is on vacation, so he’s left the site in my capable hands. (I question his judgement too.) Feel free to be in touch. After a week of torrential rains, it looks like we’re returning to the wonderfully pleasant fall-like weather the area is known for. But because Mother Nature isn’t cutting us any slack, we may well see temperatures drop dramatically in the later part of the week, with daytime highs nearing only the 60s. Thankfully, though, it should be a dry one.

Somber Ceremony at Pentagon Remembers 184 Lost in 9/11 Attacks: As the country marked the tenth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, Mayor Vince Gray joined Vice President Joe Biden and other dignitaries at a memorial ceremony for the 184 people who lost their lives at the Pentagon, reports the Post. President Obama, writes the Washington Times, started the day at the World Trade Center Memorial before heading to Shanksville, Pennsylvania and ending the day at the Pentagon, where he laid a wreath, one of the 184 left behind to commemorate the dead.

Howard Defeats Morehouse In Close Game: As we reported last week, the football rivalry between Howard and Morehouse hasn’t been particularly fair — in the 1993, 1996 and 1997 shutouts, Howard outscored Morehouse 135-0. But on Saturday’s AT&T Nation’s Football Classic at RFK, Howard was only able to pull off a three-point victory, beating Morehouse 30-27.

Another Transgender Person Shot in D.C.: Fox 5 reports that a transgender person was shot in Southeast early Monday morning. Though expected to survive, the shooting adds to a series of crimes that have targeted the District’s transgender community, including one killing and an assault on three people this weekend alone. Just two weeks ago, a D.C. police officer opened fire on three transgender women in a car after a late-night dispute.

Kwame Finishes Triathlon: D.C. Council Chair Kwame Brown promised that he wouldn’t break any records, and he lived up to that. But he did finish his first triathlon this weekend, finishing the 40K cycling portion and 10K run in just over two hours, ending up 1,438th out of 2,417 participants. (Mayor Adrian Fenty, who regularly participated in triathlons, still leads all local elected official with his 37th place finish in 2011.) From someone who is terrified of running, my hat goes off to him and everyone else that participated in the Nation’s Triathlon — but was fortunately spared the swim. Our thoughts also go out to the family and friends of the competitor that died during the event.

Briefly Noted: Man do I miss my TI-85 … Prince George’s County Administration Building remains closed after last week’s flooding … VRE returns to normal service … One of the two stolen trucks that caused a terror panic found.

This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010 we posed a few questions to Councilmember Michael A. Brown (I-At Large) and a dog was shot and killed at Adams Morgan Day. In 2009, tea party protestors took to the Mall.
