Photo by aperryproductionsDespite the chaotic way in which it was passed yesterday, Mayor Vince Gray said today that he’d sign the proposal increasing taxes on District residents making more than $350,000 a year.
At his bi-weekly press conference today, Gray argued that the tax, which was similar to one he proposed as part of his 2012 budget, had been broadly debated. “I don’t know what more discussion could have been had, frankly,” he said.
Additionally, he called the tax increase “more progressive and equitable” than a tax on out-of-state municipal bonds that takes effect in 2012. He argued that the burden on the 6,000 households that would pay the tax would be relatively low — for every $50,000 above $350,000, they would only pay an additional $200 a year, he said.
