Good morning, Washington. We hope you’re all carrying umbrellas today — it’s supposed to be another wet one. Sadly, the weekend isn’t looking much better. Now, the news.
Public Will Still Get a Chance to Weigh In on iGaming: We reported earlier this week that two members of the D.C. Council had introduced legislation that would repeal a controversial internet gambling initiative — also known as iGaming — in the District, but it looks like that measure won’t move forward until the public weighs in on the original idea. The Washington Times reports that Councilmember Jack Evans (D-Ward 2) has pledged to move forward with the planned public hearings in all eight wards, which were originally scheduled for August but put off after opponents complained of the timing. Evans, who has sounded skeptical of iGaming, might want to be careful — we have it on good authority that online gambling has a ton of support.
We May Have Gotten a Tax Increase, But Maryland Got a Toll Increase: The Post reports that Maryland will raise tolls on roads, bridges and tunnels as of November 1, a move required to increase revenue and cover existing debt. A toll on the Bay Bridge, for example, will jump from $2.50 to $4, the first such in increase since the 1970s. The new tolls are expected to bring in an additional $225 million by 2014. Earlier this week, Virginia was given the green light to put tolls on its stretch of I-95.
Metro Looks to Ease Crowding at Gallery Place: Even when there aren’t delays in the system, the Gallery Place Metro station can be a daunting place to be, whether because of crowding or the occasional pack of kids causing trouble. According to the Examiner, Metro officials are looking for ways to at least resolve some of the over-crowding, including doing away with the “moat” between the platform and the wall on the upper floors and possibly creating a new walkway above the tracks. Some 26,000 boardings happen per day in the station, up from 6,500 in 1997.

The Post editorial board is not happy with local officials today.
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, we really dug through some dusty old yearbooks to get a picture of Mayor Vince Gray in his high school days and were finally able to nail down how much those 2002 Pershing Park arrests cost the city — $22 million. In 2009, the Smithsonian unveiled the Hope diamond without any type of setting.
