Photo by rin mVirginia’s State Board of Education has approved new versions of two elementary school textbooks after egregious factual and grammatical errors were discovered in the texts last December.
The board approved corrected editions of Our Virginia: Past and Present and Our America to 1865, published by Five Ponds Press. The original version of one of the textbooks wrote that thousands of African Americans fought for the South during the Civil War, a claim most historians reject. The author said she had gleaned the “fact” from research on the internet.
The revised textbooks underwent a rigorous state approval process this summer, including analysis by a teacher, a content specialist and a subject-matter expert.
