MONDAY

One of the staples of Bay Area garage rock, Ty Segall, also put out one of this year’s most solid offerings from the subgenre, Goodbye Bread. He’ll be at Comet Ping Pong tonight with Sun Wolf and Mikal Cronin. $10, 9:30 p.m.

>> 9:30 Club: Foster the People, Reptar (early show), Cults (late show). 6:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Both shows sold out.

TUESDAY

While we could tell you at length why you should go see local electronic duo Protect-U, Afro-prog genre benders Hume and brutally noisy Dope Body at the Black Cat. But we figured we’d let this trippy video (made by Britton Powell and Wilson Kemp of Hume) do it for us. $8, 8 p.m.

The last time Marnie Stern came to Red Palace, she didn’t do a sound check and therefore her technically brilliant and energy-filled set was frought with sound issues. The diminutive guitarist gets another shot at full blown awesomeness at the same venue with opener, No Joy. $10 in advance / $12 day of show, 8:30 p.m.

>> Birchmere: X (showing their movie, The Unheard Music and playing their album Los Angeles in its entirety.) $29.50, 7:30 p.m.

>> Sixth & I: Laura Marling. Sold out. 8 p.m.

WEDNESDAY

The Felice Brothers stand as proof that not all folk-based acts featuring accordion and violin need be from the south or midwest. This band of brothers (and three others) from upstate New York will be at the Black Cat for a midweek show. Virgin Forest opens. $18, 8 p.m.

>> DC9: Adam Franklin & Bolts of Melody, Dot Dash. $10, 9 p.m.

THURSDAY

After visa issues forced them to cancel their visit to the 9:30 Club earlier this summer, Mogwai can finally make their triumphant return. Be forewarned first time viewers, this band is so loud that your extremities will vibrate and your heartbeat will change its pace. Soft Moon opens. $20, 7 p.m.

>> Warner Theatre: Elvis Costello. $69.50-$125, 8 p.m.

>> Black Cat: Viva Voce, The Parson Redheads. $12, 8 p.m.

FRIDAY

The Fillmore, the area’s newest venue, will be hosting post-punk mainstays and singers of “Pretty in Pink” (which came out before the John Hughes movie) The Psychedelic Furs. Talking Heads spinoff The Tom Tom Club opens. $35, 8 p.m.

>> Red Palace: Jenny Owen Youngs, Hank and Cupcakes. $10 in advance / $12 day of show, 9:00 p.m.

>> Black Cat: The Horrors, The Stepkids. $15, 9 p.m.

SATURDAY

The 9:30 Club is playing host to quite the variety of bands during their two shows this evening. Deerhoof, the arty group that’s been combining high-pitchted staccato vocals with equally staccato drum beats and unconventional melodies for years, will be headlining the early show. Oddly enough, their support will be occasional cross-dresser and DIschord staple E.D. Sedgwick and local alt-country mystery man Benjy Ferree. $15, 7 p.m.

Das Racist, who amused both us and themselves in their D.C. debut at the Rock and Roll Hotel last winter, will be headlining the late show, touring off their first proper album Relax. Danny Brown and Despot will be opening. $20, 11:30 p.m.

SUNDAY

The extraordinarily prolific and influential Americana songwriter Bonnie “Prince” Billy will be at the Birchmere tonight. DCist got to talk to Will Oldham last week so keep an eye out for that conversation later this week. $25, 7:30 p.m.
