Patrick Casey

A 33-year-old George Washington University graduate student who was injured after trying to break up a fight at the McDonald’s at 1916 M Street NW has now died.

Patrick Casey, an Afghanistan war veteran who was studying international affairs at the university, succumbed to injuries he suffered during the fight on Friday. According to reports, Casey attempted to interject into a fight between three people outside the fast food restaurant at 2:40 a.m.; at some point, Casey was punched and fell backwards onto the pavement. Casey, who was described as always having an “infectious grin and this big sort of laugh,” had been receiving treatment at George Washington University Hospital since the incident.

No arrests have been made in connection to the assault, though three suspects remain at-large and may have been captured on surveillance camera outside the McDonald’s.
