Good morning, Washington. Today, the D.C. Council will finally get to the bottom of Grassgate, the recent flare-up regarding grass-cutting contracts in the city. Councilmember Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3) will be leading the hearing this afternoon, and the Post editorial board wants her to expose how contracts are doled out — especially to firms that are supposed to be local.
D.C. Council Addresses School Enrollment Fraud: Non-D.C. residents sneaking into the city to attend public school? It happens, or so found the D.C. Council during a hearing yesterday. According to the Examiner, in 2010 93 students in D.C. public schools were found to be non-residents. Worse yet, school officials have failed to collect tuition — up to $12,000 per student each year — from those found to be from outside the District. D.C. Council Chair Kwame Brown has proposed legislation that would increase enforcement and fines from $500 to $2,000. The Washington Times notes that 10 of the council’s 13 members support his measure, all but assuring that it will pass.
Maryland Group Pushes for Higher Cigarette Taxes: The same group that pushed to increase taxes on alcohol now wants Maryland to raise taxes on cigarettes, from $2 to $3 a pack, reports The Washington Times. If the state’s legislature complied, Maryland would jump the District in cigarette taxes — D.C. charges $2.50 a pack — potentially steering more cigarette smokers who used to cross the border to stay put, More likely, though, everyone will just start heading to Virginia, which only charges 30 cents a pack.
Editor Seeks Gun: A few reporters have already gone through the process of getting themselves a gun in the District as a journalistic endeavor, but make sure to read Washington Times Senior Editor Emily Miller as she goes through the process herself.
Briefly Noted: Victim of 14th Street hit-and-run dies; police announce it was intentional … Man has jaw shattered in brazen D.C. assault … The Cooch doesn’t appreciate President Obama’s about-face on DOMA … Sheriff candidates are sooooo much better in Loudoun County … Anacostia River cleanup takes place tomorrow … Do the Occupy D.C. protesters suffer from a case of muddled message? … Would you pay for Tareq and Michaele Salahi’s undergarments? Would anyone?
This Day in DCist: On this day in 2010, Adrian Fenty said he “left it all out there” and Jon Stewart revealed the location of his “Rally to Restore Sanity.” In 2009, Jawbox reunited on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and Marion Barry remained in the ICU after being treated for dehydration.
